GAVIOTA PASS - Gaviota, California

On U.S. Highway between Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo, the narrow pass on the left provided an ideal ambush spot in the early days. Here in 1846 the Spanish soldiers waited for General Fremont's force. However, the General took his soldiers through by way of the San Marco's grade and avoided the treacherous pass.
